Thornton State Beach

Thornton State Beach

Just to the south of San Francisco is where you’ll find the secluded beach that is part of Thornton State Beach. The park is well-known for its equestrian and hiking routes that are located on the bluff terraces, which are located high above the waterline. The cliffs have been eroded away over time, which has made it more difficult to get down to the beach below.

Because of this, the state has restricted access to the park for the general public. At the present time, this land is managed by the City of Daly City as the Thornton Beach Vista, which is an observation platform with views of the ocean. There are warnings posted all around the view warning people not to walk beyond the blocked off pavement because the area is dangerous. However, there is still a way down that isn’t dangerous. There are broad routes for horseback riders to make it down to the beach (approximately a half a mile from the parking area) if you step over the ropes and head north to the Mar Vista Stables. Hikers are able to accomplish the same thing! When the tide is low, Thornton Beach is at its most enjoyable because higher tides can leave the entire beach flooded. You will find yourself at Phillip Burton Shore if you continue to travel north along the beach, and you will finally reach the entrance point at Fort Funston.

As one continues walking south down the coastline, one will eventually reach Mussel Rock Park, which does not have any access points or exits. If you plan on going down here, you should bring a coat because the weather can be blustery, misty, and chilly. At the westernmost point of John Daly Boulevard, at Skyline Boulevard, you’ll find the parking lot for Thornton Beach Vista (Hwy 35). Because there are only so many parking spots available, you should try to arrive as early as you can. Continue reading about Mussel Rock Park
