Carolands Chateau

Carolands Carolands, sometimes referred to as “The Chateau,” was built around the year 1915 and is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding exemplifications of French Classical architecture to be found in the United States. In addition to being designated as a landmark by the state of California, it is also included on the National Register of Historic Places.

565 Remillard Drive, Hillsborough, California 94010 is the address for Carolands.

The Design and Building Process

Harriett Pullman Carolan, the heiress to the Pullman railroad car fortune, and her husband, Francis J. Carolan, constructed the residence in Hillsborough. Ernest Sanson, a French architect, was responsible for designing the 98-room chateau that sits on 554 acres. Willis Polk, a well-known architect in the area, served as the construction supervisor for this project. Originally planned by French landscape architect Achilles Duchene, the gardens featured a tea house, swimming pool, orangerie, and tempietto at one point in its history.

Deterioration & Renovation

Over the course of its existence, the property changed hands a number of times, and a significant portion of the original land was parceled off into multiple lots. The mansion was allowed to fall into disrepair, and despite the fact that it was frequently threatened with demolition, the majestic structure retained its historical splendor despite the neglect. next blog post

The mansion was renovated by Ann and Charles Johnson with an incredible amount of effort and attention to every original historic feature. After living there as a family for a decade, in 2012 they decided to make a donation of the Chateau to the Carolands Foundation, which is a charitable organization with the mission of preserving Carolands for the benefit of philanthropic causes and the study of architecture. learn more here
