About San Mateo, CA
San Mateo is a city in western California’s San Mateo County. Located 16 miles south of downtown San Francisco, it boasts a prime spot on the bay’s western shore. Ohlone Indians (called Coastanoans by Spanish explorers) were the first to settle in the area. Before Europeans ever set foot on the Peninsula, this tribe had been making its home in the area spanning South San Francisco to Belmont for at least four thousand years. San Mateo became increasingly urban in the 1960s when multi-story buildings were built downtown.
